Why you’re not ranking #1 in Google?

marciacatlin · July 25, 2019 ·

 6 Common SEO Mistakes

6 most common SEO mistakes according to Yoast.

Mobile site speed is critical to success, no matter what kind of business you’re in.

  1. Faster is better
The faster your site, the happier Google will be. Google has indicated that site speed is one of the signals used by its algorithm to rank pages.

Here’s a useful tool from Google to check your site speed: Google PageSpeed Insights.

Resize your images to speed up loading time. If you have a WordPress site, you can do this easily by installing Smush, a plugin that does that for you.

  2. Optimizing for the wrong keywords
Small business owners often optimize for very generic keywords. So the universe of competition is way too large for a ranking. Suggest adding your location or something more specific to the keyword to narrow your focus, thus improving your ranking.

  3. Not intriguing visitors
The page title on your website is the first message visitors see on Google Search — one of the most important ranking factors for Google.
It must include the relevant keyword and be written in a way that intrigues your visitors. It must be 400-600 pixels in length or succumb to Google’s decapitation. You don’t want visitors to be unable to read the full title in the SERPs!

  4. Failing to write professional content
It’s more important now than ever to stand out from the crowd. That’s what quality, original content (at least 300 words) can do for your business. Google will not see you as an expert on any topic if you only write a few paragraphs.

  5. No call to action for your visitors
Your CTA is the chance to motivate your audience to take steps toward becoming a customer or client. Many argue that the call to action is the most important part of your site. Skipping it is a grave mistake that won’t bode well for your company!

  6. The future is mobile
Google switched to mobile-first indexing last year. So Google now looks at the mobile version of your site to determine your ranking.

It means that the mobile version of your website becomes the starting point for what Google includes in their index and the baseline for how they determine rankings.

    Is your website mobile friendly?

High-Performance Local and Small Business SEO
With nearly 50% of all Google searches having local intent, local search engine optimization is more important than ever. 50% of customers who perform Google searches for local businesses on smartphones, and 34% who search on a desktop, visit a business within 24 hours.

Today’s SEO has been elevated to a strategic element. Business owners and marketers now view their websites as marketing tools primarily not just great designs. Read more about our Local SEO Services.

How to Find the Perfect Genesis Theme for Your Business

marciacatlin · June 2, 2019 ·

how to find the perfect genesis theme for business

First, know what you’re trying to build. Never pick a theme until you know exactly what you’re trying to create.

Secondly, remember that planning website content is the most important part of the website creation process and the part that requires the most self-discipline.

Evaluate the StudioPress Theme page when you’re looking for themes that are designed for your project and include the features you plan to use

Studio Press does develop themes intended for certain uses, such as their Authority Theme that is meant to grow your “know, like, and trust” profile, the Academy Theme which is for people who sell education, and the just-released Breakthrough which is ideal for agencies and service type businesses.

But most themes have multi-purposes and audiences. Don’t dismiss an entire theme because of one aspect of the appearance.

There is a StudioPress theme that’s perfect for your site. Browse our theme catalog, which includes filters to help you find the themes that fit your specific needs.

The Real Reason To Avoid Site Builders

marciacatlin · May 26, 2019 ·

rock climbing, why you should avoid site builders

For most of us, the days of building websites from scratch have come and gone. That is the good news. Better still website prices are all over the map so you can even get a decent site for the best price of all — zero. But, what is the real reason to avoid site builders?

Should you even have a website? If it’s to build your brand, reputation and customer base, don’t you put quality first and focus on the long-term?

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

If you can turn on your laptop and check out your Facebook page, does that qualify you to create a website on Wix or one of the other scores of easy, automagic website builders? Not to mention optimizing it for Google search.

It does! But here’s why you shouldn’t. When things go wrong, who is there to help you out? No web designer who is ready and able, and knows everything about the modern web, digital marketing and much more.

Sadly, support among site builder services varies widely from email-only service to online FAQs, etc. If you can fly solo, you will be fine with this arrangement!

The WordPress Advantage

How many web designers/developers out there specialize in Wix, Weebly Squarespace, and Shopify? Not many. On the other hand, WordPress now powers 30% of all websites on the web so there is plenty of help when you own a WordPress site.

Scarce Support and No Migration

In order for a website to grow, you have to water it. When you create a website with Weebly, Wix or Squarespace, you don’t get the support you need or deserve.

What if your website goes down or something stops working? Do you have the skills to fix it before your customers notice? Certain parts of a website can stop working and you may not even know it. Customers may be trying to contact you, but you’re not a webmaster. How would you know?

Want to move say your Wix site to another site builder or to WordPress in the future? Unfortunately, you can never export this site so you’ll need to rebuild it from scratch — which means you don’t even own your site builder website!

WordPress vs Website Builders

WordPress is a content management system (CMS)— not a website builder. CMS’s are flexible but have a learning curve. Website builders are less flexible but easier to use.

The Genesis Framework

When starting a business, it’s more important than ever to establish and maintain an online presence. I use the Genesis Framework and StudioPress themes for WordPress exclusively for all the websites I build.

Genesis provides the secure and search-engine-optimized foundation that takes WordPress to places you never thought it could go.

“I’m not against page builders, but here’s the deal … if you have 300+ posts/pages full of your page builder blocks, it’s going to cost a ton of money to redesign your site or switch to Gutenberg or anything else.

Ready to Leave Magento? BigCommerce Can Help!

Magento 1.0 End of Life Countdown

COMMERCE BEYOND LIMITS
Innovate, outperform and overachieve with BigCommerce, the industry’s most versatile enterprise solution. Now it’s time for the Magento migration to BigCommerce

In September last year, Magento announced that they would be sunsetting Magento 1. In other words, all early versions of their products (1.1-1.9)
would no longer be supported with maintenance and security patches.

The official end-of-life date for versions Magento Commerce 1 (formerly Enterprise Edition) and Magento Open Source 1 (formerly Community Edition) is June 2020.

Understandably, some businesses facing this re-platform are considering their options. Setting up Magento 1 and moving to Magento 2 is both expensive and time-consuming.

Businesses can consider moving from Magento 1 to a SaaS platform like BigCommerce where they can often launch faster (on average 50% faster) and on a more reasonable budget compared with Magento 2.

Stay a step ahead with SaaS

Leverage best-in-class uptime, performance and protection to outpace competitors. With the power of Google Cloud Platform, BigCommerce offers multiple layers of security, unparalleled bandwidth, and blazing-fast speed so you can focus on generating sales — and less on maintaining your site.

Focus on sales and innovation. Not on monitoring and maintenance.

With a lower total cost of ownership, BigCommerce showcases an intuitive interface, and expert services to minimize your time-to-market.

Built for growth, the BigCommerce platform offers advanced merchandising tools, one-page checkout and a fully customizable theming engine.

Platform Flexibility and Extensibility
Your business and your brand are unique. You need to look for an e-commerce platform that has the flexibility and extensibility to work for your product, customer, and business needs. It also needs to be able to grow with your business.

One of the major selling points of Magento is its flexibility. You have complete control to mold the platform to your needs (with all the costs those changes entail). But with Magento, the more you customize the more expensive and harder your store is to manage and maintain.

Magento Migration to BigCommerce

It’s possible to get the same extensibility through a SaaS platform, provided you choose one like BigCommerce that is set up with enterprise-class integrations, flexible APIs and webhooks. These features will enable you to customize your platform for selling online with a great deal of flexibility, even though you don’t have access to the source code.
